Last Friday during the hurricane force winds of the first real norther, Weston and I set out to get his first "Trophy" buck although he didn't know that. I had hunted this stand a couple times already and this buck has been a regular, so I knew it was only a matter of time. Just before 5 the buck materialized out of nowhere, Weston just happened to move at the wrong time and the buck was having none of it. As he walked away you could tell Weston's heart just dropped, I consoled him, telling him that the buck would be back.
At about 6 O'clock the buck came back out for a bite of corn and brought one of his running buddies with him for moral support. Weston slowly made his way to the floor and behind the stock of his Paw Paw's crossbow. I made that poor kid wait and wait and wait until the moment was right almost two and half minutes of sitting there asking, "NOW" about every two seconds. When the buck got right I gave him the OK to send it and send it he did!! He made an absolutely perfect shot. The buck was shot at 23 yards and ran about 60 before piling up just inside the brush line. The next 20 minutes were probably the longest in history for the man child.
This is Weston's first deer with a crossbow, his first forked antler buck, and of course the biggest of his life thus far. I know that his Paw Paw was watching as that arrow made that short flight. There were a tough couple of minutes in that stand because of it.
The deer scored 100 1/8" Gross B&C @ 5.5
