Just be glad he wasn't successful in raising the sales tax by 1 percentage point this past legislative session.

This has been pushed by the big box national retailers, with a large brick and mortar presence, for at least a decade.

Having to collect sales taxes while online only retailers, like Amazon, were not put the brick and mortar retailers at a significant disadvantage. The brick and mortar retailers would see a high basket abandonment rate for customers’ orders once the final amount with sales tax added was shown.

A lot of misinformation in this thread. This is 100% an Abbott and Texas legislature thing. The Supreme Court decision ruled that the states could charge sales tax on online purchases where there was no physical presence in the state. They did not demand it or pass a nationwide law. The republican controlled Texas legislature voted near unanimously the new law for Texas and Gov. Abbott signed the bill. The Texas government passed a bill that raises taxes on the citizens of Texas and will raise more money for the government to spend, bottom line.

Montana no sales tax and a low
property tax, but a fairly aggressive state income tax. Now if they excluded pensions it would be a no brainer.

We need to run Abbott off the next election and elect someone who is more favorable to our way of thinking. Perhaps Beto will run for governor.

This is the way I understand it. SCOTUS ruled in South Dakota vs Wayfair that SD can require that WF submit sales tax in sales within SD. This serves as a legal precedent to support all the other states including Texas that have started collecting sales tax on companies that sell within the state but have no physical presence within the state. SCOTUS did not mandate that all states collect sales tax on internet sales. Texas could have elected to not collect the tax but when have you seen a politician pass the pork barrel without dipping in?

I ordered an eye cup set from swaro and the lady acted surprised when she said “it appears we have to collect $x.xx in Texas sales tax from you as well”

I might be misunderstanding y’all. If you go to Walmart and buy a shirt, you pay sales tax. If you buy the shirt for less online, you don’t think you should pay sales tax?
