Weston had a very exciting hunt yesterday evening. While getting in the stand and set up no bullets in guns yet door not even closed a pig came out to feeder. No corn out so it didn’t stay long enough for a shot. Then at 6:48 a good sized pig comes out to the feeder about 70 yards. Weston took his time, while sitting on my lap at the angle he was shooting I couldn’t see the pig but Momma was watching. When the pig turned broadside he squeezed the trigger and 22-250 barked! I look over to Momma's face in shock! After an expletive or two she says "HE DROPPED IT!!!" I look towards the feeder and sure enough the pig was down. Weston had a HUGE grin needless to say everyone was excited! We are watching the pig and it’s down but still kicking a little bit. We talked about shooting it again or me going down to check on it but decided just to give it a few minutes when bam it pops up and takes off. Instantly I get that bad feeling in my gut. We wait 10 long minutes before we climb down to go look. Good blood for 20’ then nothing. So many different trails through the thick briars we back out before dark and run back to camp to get jeans because we are all in shorts and new batteries in flash lights. We even brought the lab back with us. After another hour or more of searching for the next drop of blood I get desperate and put the dog on the leash. He’s not a tracking dog by any means but he does love to go after pigs when I bring them back to camp dead. I spent 20 minutes getting dragged thru thickest briars ever looking for anything only to find nothing. Needless to say we were all disappointed. The only thing I can think of is he hit him a little high in the “void” area and the shock wave stunned him for a bit before he was able to get up and get away. Anyway we are in good spirits about it, and will be back at it this evening and hopefully have much better results!
