    Turkey loads

    Question to the TBH braintrust.

What load do you prefer for turkey; Hevi shot or Winchester Extended Range loads. My choke will handle either. I have a 2 3/4" 12ga, so Remington and Federal loads are out.

    Thanks!

hevi shot turns things off! Great results even with 2 3/4 shells

My 870 with an xtra full choke always patterned best with Federal Premium straight 4s, both in 2 3/4 and 3". Never tried them myself but I know a lot of turkey guys that swear by the hevishot.

Yeah, I forgot to put the caveat in that I wasn't using my bow, because I knew someone was going to say that.

I like the 3.5" Win. #5 in my 870. I will be shooting a Super X2 this year. Just make sure to pattern your gun. They don't always shoot where they are pointing.

Yep, that's what I was going to do this weekend. I have used the Win. Elite turkey loads for several years, but wanted to see if Hevyshot or the Win. Ext. Range would pattern better and give me more knockdown power down range. Going to BPS at lunch to pick one or the other up.

I like the federal duplex loads. #4 and #6 shot mixed in the same shell. Pretty powerful stuff!!

Thats the load that my 870 as well as 10 gauge pattern the best with... Nothing like those Federal 4's; I can't bring myself to buying a box of shells that are $30 for half the amount of shells I could buy otherwise

i gotta tell you, prior to hevi i would never have shot past 30 yards.

i patterned my hevi a few years ago with an undertaker choke put a red dot on the top of my benelli and tap a jake at 52 yards.

I shoot the 3.5 hevi and it patterns great and is very very lethal.

Hevi shot packs a punch and I've shot probably 20 birds with it. Stoned every one of'em. Two years ago I shot three in one shot, turned them into a pile of wings and spurs. I will caution you to pattern your shot. (I know its expensive to do) I've found them to pattern more consistent to Steel and if you get too tight of choke it'll scatter your pattern.

I took a turkey at 63yds with the Win. #5 lead. I dont' recommend it but if your gun is patterned, you can do it. I use a set of adjustable fiber-optic sights on my turkey gun. It is dialed in at 30yds.

I still shoot bismuth 2 3/4 in magnum 4 with IC ,I dont shoot anything past 35 yds, but I did take two with one shot in Kyle a couple of yrs ago. I set my decoy at 25 yds and use that as a yardage marker.

                            x-full choke and 3"mag #7-1/2 at 30yds.
                            Tore it's head nearly off.
Back when I used to kill turkeys, I mostly used #6's or anything else laying around.
One pellet in the brain will do the trick. Never lost a bird that I ever shot.

However, I don't shoot turkeys anymore. I can't stand cleaning the stinking things plus I don't even like eatin them.
Ya'll can have mine and I'll take the quail birds.

Thanks for the input. I grabbed a couple of boxes of Hevishot 13s in 5's and 6's at lunch and I'll pattern them this weekend.
