I stopped by and talked to my soon to be 84yo friend today for a few hours
One of the stories he told me was about an elk hunt where he was focused on sneaking up on a bull and suddenly found himself being investigated by an elk calf he had not seen.
Said it spooked and all hell broke loose on the side of that mountain as he had slipped into the middle of a bedded herd

I have never killed an elk with a bow. My question is, after leaving him out all night, would the meat still be good?

Depends on the temps, if you got the guts out and what else you did to care for the meat before you left it there.
