I would choose three 8” plates for about the same price at one of the 10” ones.

You’re going to want to do something other than the carabiners though—they aren’t going to last. If you can find some used fire hose or baler belts, you’ll be good for a long time.

Are the life of the carabiners doomed by the shrapnel or by direct Bullet hits?

Both.

Take a look at the hangers I posted above. $5 each, and will handle thousands of direct impacts. Much easier to use than hose as well. I still find that hanging with hose you eventually damage the bolts beyond use. The bolt on those hangers are completely protected by the target. I actually use the hanger my point of aim, and intentionally shoot it. A LOT. Lol

Shrapnel is what I’d me most worried about. As an example, this past New Years, a friend of mine and I threw together a range on his ranch. We drove a few T posts and hung targets with an old lariat rope. I think the most one lasted was 10 shots.
