    Some may not believe it

Some may not believe it but the rut is starting here in Brazoria county. I know its hard to believe since the majority of the rut happens in November and December in other parts of the state but not here along the upper Texas coastal counties.

The younger bucks have been site running does for a few days now but a couple days ago i saw the first mature bucks chasing a doe here around the house. Yesterday a mature 10 was locked on a doe all day long behind the house and would push all the other bucks away that tried to come near. I feed the deer every day in the backyard and yesterday the doe came to the corn I threw out with the 10 in tow. 4 other satellite bucks kept trying to work in but he wouldn't let any of them get within 30 yards or so.

Should be a lot of buck movement at the opener here along the coast.

I've heard that the rut for coastal deer is a lot earlier but I wouldn't think it would be this early.

My wife hit a nice 8 this morning about a 1/2 mile from our gate. He was running a doe and ran out in front of the wrong person. Lol

It’s always just about over before bow season. Pretty well known. Matagorda/Brazoria counties.

According to a TPWD study, done in the mid 90s, coastal deer rut is generally as early as August to late September. Coastal deer being roughly Corpus Christi to Beaumont area, I believe.

Here is a link to the study

Due to hurricanes sometimes wiping out the deer population, deer have adapted to mother nature and breed early to prolong the species. Same thing happens in the LA along the coastal Parishes.

Acorns falling and scrapes on our lease in Angelina County. But, the bucks I am seeing daily are still in bachelor groups. Does on my property in Houston County are still bunched up with their young ones. Nothing seen chasing there yet.

Yep, had two different buddies call me yesterday and said they saw a big, wide mature deer chasing a doe on some of my property just off the road, one in the morning, one in the evening. Hoping he'll get back in the woods and do that and get away from the site of roads.
