    Red River NM

I’m wanting to take the family to RR after the first of the year, and would like recommendations on places to stay within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and ski lifts. Post up y’alls favorite places to stay.

I’d go to Taos and stay at The inn on La Loma... RR is super touristy and slammed. Taos has a nice mix of culture and access to lots of outdoor activities. We go every year in August for at least a few weeks to escape the heat. If you are interested in Taos, pm and I’ll give you restaurants, fishing and river guides, lakes to take the family too, etc.

I went to Taos wasn’t nice the town full of homeless people. Red river or angel fire would be my pick. I’ve been to Taos multiple times gets worse every trip.

^^^^ this. I've been going to RedRiver for over 20 yrs and love the place. I have stayed at numerous places and the best place I've stayed at is just out side of eagles nest. Only 10 min from RedRiver. I would have to look it up but you wouldn't be disappointed. Every morning and evening we had elk all around us. Now we usually go during the summer but it's accessible during winter months.

Curious where y’all ran into all the homeless people? That’s off putting, IMO RR tries way too hard to be Texas

I couldn’t even walk through town without homeless trying to hit me up for money. Ruidoso is very nice as well

Copper king lodge. Ski lift is right there and can get a place with a kitchen at a reasonable rate. Get one of the 2 bedrooms on the river and take some deer corn. Can feed the muleys out of your hand.

I always stay at the A frames across from the lift house. Walking distance to a lot.

I’ll be one that says avoid staying in Taos. Cool place to visit for a few hours but much more touristy and liberal on the whole.

In Red River take the snowmobile tour up to Bobcat Pass.

If skiing is a priority and you are a somewhat experienced skier I would choose Taos without a doubt.
With that said you are going to spend more to stay close to the slopes in Taos.
We always stayed in town and drove to the slopes. 15 to 20 minute drive if I remember right.
In red river and angel fire you can find decent pricing on lodging close to the lifts.
Good luck on your decision. Any you choose will still be a blast.

                          Accurate info Rubi513

Taos proper is a different experience. It’s an old city, lots of culture and art. Unfortunately, it’s attracts lots of drug addicts and homeless folk.

Taos ski valley is located about 18 miles from Taos proper. Slopes there are considers more advanced than Red River and Angel Fire.

Red River is a low key tourist town. Very homey, full of Texans and Okies. We love Red River, especially in the summer. We stay in Lifts West. Not fancy at all, but neither is the town. It’s a block from the lift. The slopes cater to families and it’s a relatively small operation. Angel Fire is a larger ski complex. Both can suffer during low snow years.

Bobcat pass has (or did) have cross country skiing as well as snowmobiles.
