I’m wanting to take the family to RR after the first of the year, and would like recommendations on places to stay within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and ski lifts. Post up y’alls favorite places to stay.

I’d go to Taos and stay at The inn on La Loma... RR is super touristy and slammed. Taos has a nice mix of culture and access to lots of outdoor activities. We go every year in August for at least a few weeks to escape the heat. If you are interested in Taos, pm and I’ll give you restaurants, fishing and river guides, lakes to take the family too, etc.

Curious where y’all ran into all the homeless people? That’s off putting, IMO RR tries way too hard to be Texas

If skiing is a priority and you are a somewhat experienced skier I would choose Taos without a doubt.
With that said you are going to spend more to stay close to the slopes in Taos.
We always stayed in town and drove to the slopes. 15 to 20 minute drive if I remember right.
In red river and angel fire you can find decent pricing on lodging close to the lifts.
Good luck on your decision. Any you choose will still be a blast.

Accurate info Rubi513
Taos proper is a different experience. It’s an old city, lots of culture and art. Unfortunately, it’s attracts lots of drug addicts and homeless folk.
Taos ski valley is located about 18 miles from Taos proper. Slopes there are considers more advanced than Red River and Angel Fire.
Red River is a low key tourist town. Very homey, full of Texans and Okies. We love Red River, especially in the summer. We stay in Lifts West. Not fancy at all, but neither is the town. It’s a block from the lift. The slopes cater to families and it’s a relatively small operation. Angel Fire is a larger ski complex. Both can suffer during low snow years.
Bobcat pass has (or did) have cross country skiing as well as snowmobiles.
