I'm going a little hybrid of the no till. The two plots I have converting it from the switch grass that has been in there for years so I need to disc it a little to take care of that grass first.
The first picture is the area that I cleared out last year. Never got a plot established because it flooded till this summer. You can see that I had lightly disked but a lot of the grass is laying on top to be used like mulch. The plan is once I throw seed is to the pull a drag over it to get good seed to soil contact.
The second pic is where I had sprayed and now mowed, then sprayed again. Will do the same on Saturday to disk to chop up the grass.
In both cases, I'm not looking at plowing the grass under and bringing old soil to the surface.

        Far less money
        Less time
        Less equipment
        Better soil and crops

Spray field ( spray rig $100-600)
Leave it dead till ready to plant
Broadcast seed.. then shred or roller pack

        Will grow in the mulch/thatch
        Retain more soil moisture
        Require less fertilizer
        Less erosion
        Less fuel
        Way less time

Don’t know how big of plots your wanting to plant but a 25 gallon spray rig has been my most useful piece of equipment for years. And I own or have access to about anything equipment wise one could ever dream of.
Yup! I did the same. I am blown away. Saves time, is cheaper, and gives better results. HIGHLY suggest this method, it is much better for the soil.

If anyone wants a disc around Columbus, I'll let my old one go for cheap. It is just take up space.

I did throw & mow last year with oats. I upped my seeding rate, and it worked great.
Then I come back after the oats get about 3" tall and fertilize.

I use a box blade to break and strip the ground then i hook up a 30 year old 7' tandem disc to really turn over the soil. Plant then disc again and pray for rain.

Cant remember, it is old and beat up. I will take pictures next time I am out there. It'd be priced very cheap.

You could pull a 7-8ft 3pt disc with that tractor easy.

like said above i would look for a 6ft or so offset disc. (if you want to plow it up deep)

I would still lightly plow the soil even if i was going to plant anything. Like "LOW FENCE" did. If you just scratch it 3" down or so would be good. Then chain drag over it.

If its going to rain immediately after you could skip the dragging.

How close to trees could you get? i have a lot of good post oaks and not a TON of totally clear fields. i don't want to kill the trees but would like to grow a plot around some of them.

Gly won’t hurt trees. I’ve been planting in some way and spraying next to them for over 20 years

Enough sunlight might be your biggest issue (not to derail thread)

I wanted to do that too, but the hogs ate all my seed. I can’t believe you can get away with that where there are lots of hogs. I tried it on one plot a couple years ago. I had to disc that plot up and plant the conventional way. If you can, more power to you.

Plowed dirt attracts my hogs. Lol

I’ve had them root it up plowed so bad I just knew it was a failure... but still got good plots

Zero rooting in this plot done no plow. They did eat some sunflower buds though

Is the gly star plus better than round up?

                              All does the same

I don’t like “round up”. It kills too fast and burns leaves off before killing the root. It should take 10-14 days to look dead. If it’s dead next day... too hot
