    wifi thermostat help

I have Griddy for my electric provider and need a smart thermostat to adjust the temp when the price /Kwh gets really high. (a lot lately)

My existing thermostat does not have a "c" wire connected.

I don't really want it to be a leaning type just responsive to IFTTT control and controllable via IOS devices.

Any thoughts or suggestions on making it work or what T-stats work best?

    Thanks, Art

Go with Nest. You can program it as you wish. IOS friendly and you an control from your phone or web if you like.

We have Home Comfort at the house and I believe Honeywell at the ranch. Both seem to work just fine when changing temps from our IOS device (the thermostats must be connect to wifi). You can program a schedule and/or change it from your phone (which is what we do).

Griddy is not very good these days, they have been as high as $9 KWH this summer.

          Try this

Just fill out the form below and we can help you find low rates when your contract expires. Some energy companies raise their electric rates when your term expires, so you'll want to be on the ball, and ready to switch providers or plans.

For home automation try this, thermostats, ect.

Griddy has saved us a ton of money but when it’s high it is very expensive. Averaged out it’s still a big savings. It’ll be even better when we can adjust for the expensive times.

You most likely will need to run a common wire for a wifi stat.
The nest stats I have ran into without a common wire have all been problems, that were solved with a common wire.
I don't know of any that don't require it.

Bought a nest and installed it. Problem now is due to Google having pulled their API I can’t link Griddy to it via IFTTT. Going to return the nest for a Honeywell.

In the Honeywell setup, you can make it a setback, or just a normal tstat.

I don’t know what a setback is. It is WiFi so I should be able to set it up with IFTTT like I planned.

                    Yes it is programmable.

I have an ecobee. Can change temp from your phone and only “learns” if you set it up to. I just adjusted mine manually.

I had a nest when they first came out. Got it through my electric provider. I swear I used more electricity after installing the smart thermostat.
I have nothing else to offer here, but am curious about griddy. May PM you.

Setback is different temps at different times = programmable.
smart = learning how long it takes to recover temp after a setback. Thermostat "learns" how many degrees an hour your system can recover, and starts the ac or heat early so that it is at setpoint at the programmed time

I caution against large setback temps when the outside is at extreme temps, you can end up using whatever power you save by recovering to setpoint. Small setbacks in extreme temps, larger setbacks in milder temps can save power.

You will need a common wire to run a WIFI stat. If you have a single story house it should be fairly easy to run a new t stat wire or you or an ac company can wire in a module next to your system and make it a wireless t stat.

I use building 36 (alarm.com) thermostats and they are ok. Easy to use and set up, plus their control hub uses an open protocol/z-wave signal that isn’t proprietary like Nest, so there are a ton of other things you can connect to the app, like door locks, video doorbells, light switches, etc.
