Its true that Cedar trees do utilize a lot of water but the big waste is that their thick canopies prevent the water from ever hitting the ground. That is where they rob the water from other plants and our groundwater.
And cedars create rock under them and when the rain does make it down it rolls off...which causes flash floods versus seeping into the ground.
Incredible project. Its one thing to remove the cedar but the replanting of native grasses is what sets this project apart. $250-700 acre depending on the seed blend is a tough nut for a lot to swallow.
I am trying to thin out some of my cedar, only 50 acres. Only problem I have is where the cedar has been cut the huisache comes in with a vengeance. Previous owner cut a bunch of the cedar down and the huisache is getting ahead of me. I hate to spray a bunch but if I don't spray the huisache when it is cut it will be back in no time. Constant battle.
I admire anyone who brings back the land to a better state. It is not easy or cheap.
