What is considered a good size tow strap for a UTV? I have never owned or really been in one, but do work for a sling shop and can make pretty much anything. I was thinking something like a 1” wide, 2 ply nylon lifting sling with eyes on each end, maybe 15-20’? Other ideas?

Tow strap for a UTV?

Having run a rigging shop in the past, I can speak to some of this. Lots of variables. Need a little more info here. What type and size UTV are we talking here? My Kawasaki Teryx has a curb weight of 1600#, and can handle a payload of 600# in the tilt bed. It is rated to tow 1300#. Are you looking for a "TOW" strap or a "RECOVERY" strap.
Your 1" strap you are considering is going to have a WLL of about 1000#, and breaking strength of around 3000#. No way would I snatch and grab a stuck UTV or vehicle with that. The minimum I would consider would be a 3" x 30' strap, and preferably a 4". That will have a WLL of 6000-8000, and break somewhere between 20-30K, depending on nylon or polyester.

1” 2 ply nylon or polyester has a SWL of 3200 ]lbs, all nylon they are made with a 5:1 design factor, so the break strength would a minimum of 16,000 lbs. For the 2” I would go with a 2” 2ply or 3 ply, the 2ply has a minimum break strength of 32,000 lbs and the 3 ply has a break strength of 44,500 lbs. Both polyester and nylon have the same working load limits and a 5:1 design factor. I like to line the eyes with cordura for Chaffee protection and I like to put a corduroy tube that will slide up and down the body of the tow strap, this will give protection if you have to double it and hook to the tow points. I would not suggest using a 4” nylon or polyester, in my opinion the 2” 2 or 3 ply is easier to store```

Ok this is pretty good info but Nylon is stronger than Polyester size for size. Nylon is more elastic. Polyester has low stretch. Safe working loads are just a suggestion. Manufacturers don’t actually determine. It’s up to the user.
