If it's growing in or close to the drip edge of a larger oak, I would clear it. There's nothing really wrong with blackjacks, but they're not the best aesthetically or for firewood (can be knotty and heavy bark).

            Pretty much

They like understory to grow in. Bottom limbs typically die out and are hard as Chinese algebra. Must be manipulated to grow straight. Typically take 2-3 lifetimes to get big enough for any use.

If your clearing out brush... I’d cut it

The tree is a great tree but is NOT self pruning like most oaks. The lower limbs will die but will need to be cut off if you want to access the truck. I use several of them for turkey blinds because of the density of the ground level coverage. Very sturdy tree.

I would take it out. I have several big ones on my place. A full grown tree can and will break off in a wind. Had several with the whole tops breaking off. Been told by the old timers not to use as firewood in a fire place. It will burn hot and has a high resin residue that will build up in the chimney. I use it for campfire wood.
