As most here have said, not just being paranoid and this was a good wakeup call for her that she DOES need to know how to use a gun and protect herself, and even more importantly, the kids. Take advantage of this experience and teach her. My wife is the same way and she has been sheltered her whole life.
Sure, 99 times out of 100 it was nothing and just a weird lady selling stuff at night. Then the 1 happens. We train and prepare for that 1 time. Seems like that isnt much, but ask a cop, they deal with that 1 every day. Who knows when/if our 1 time comes? What is the cost of not being prepared? More than I can bear, I assure you.
I highly doubt that my wife would shoot someone, I think by the time she made that decision it would be too late. Would not take much to wrestle a gun away from a woman especially if taken by surprise.
We have an automatic gate at our entrance and a safe room in the house with a shotgun and a phone in it. That is about the best I can do.
She knows how to shoot and been to self defense classes. She does carry pepper spray with her and no doubt she would use that.
I don’t think you are out of line to think the worse case situation. I do agree with calling police instead of racing home at high speed. Today’s world is crazy and you never know what to expect from people especially at night.
The fact she needed to call and ask about a gun sounds like the issue to me. I don't blame you for freaking out at all with the bull**** we see in the news daily.
I would say that pretty much most of the time when someone comes to our door, we not not answer it unless we are expecting them. If there are kids selling something then we will open it up but that is about it.
A dog is a great option but I have seen some brazen folks, or should I say very persistent sales people that can't take a hint. I have had two Vivint reps watch my dog about to come through a window barking and it not deter them at all.
I agree about racing home, that is a dangerous situation. Keep her on the phone and drive the speed limit.
They will know they are being taped......................
Yep mandatory in my opinion. Can see motion in front of the house almost real time and in real time if they ring the bell. You can talk through the ring from your phone. Don't even need to be home. We never open the door unless its obvious who it is.
Just a good teaching moment, gather the entire family and talk about it. While your at it go over what needs to happen in case of a real break in or fire.

This!!! My wife thinks im crazy but about every few times we go eat or if we are laying in bed ill give her a scenario and make her tell me what she is going to do to keep herself safe and now with a new baby girl, her as well. Never hurts to preplan for a fire or other incident!
