I have done several sprints and Olympic ones, and a half iron. Most people that start tris are runners already, the bike is relatively easy (depending how hilly the course is). As already said, doing some bike/run bricks is important as that can be a hard transition. But most people just starting have done little to no distance swimming and need to really focus on that. I used to swim across a smallish lake and then run the trails around it (about 4 miles) and that was good workout. Unless you are already a swimmer, you need to put a lot of effort into that

When I did my first triathlon, I solely trained in an indoor pool. Then on the day of competition, the swim was on a river. No big deal right? Well, when I was training I was using the painted lanes on the pool floor to keep me straight. Apparently they don't have those in rivers or lakes! Needless to say I zig zagged the whole way. So practice your breathing and your target swimming.

Was a swimmer in high school, and a long distance swimmer at that. 500, 1000, and mile were my best events along with 400IM and 200 back. Got the breathing and kick support down, been doing push-ups like a maniac trying to build my chest and triceps to help with the swimming. Currently doing ladder type swim workouts and will build to a strong 500. The event I am going to do is only a 200, so I figure more than 2x pool swim should prepare me for 200 open water.

You can do a triathlon! Follow this sprint triathlon training plan to cross your first finish line in just eight weeks.
Any tips for training? I am really just focused on total fitness at this point but will be reading up on strategies for surviving my first event.

The fact that you come from a swimming background is a huge advantage. A lot of the less experienced are really intimidated by the swim and wear themselves out with an inefficient stroke. You will have a blast - there is something special about race day and the energy flowing through the transition area.

So much information out there advise, training strategies, nutrition, equipment etc. Most of all go out, stay hydrated and have a good time. Lots of time for all the other stuff if you choose to continue racing. Don't go out and spend a fortune until you're sure its for you and trust me you can spend a fortune!!!!
There are several local groups that can offer you lots of help on your journey. One that comes to mind right away is Conroe Triathletes I know they have a facebook page.
Curious which race you have coming up? I have my last race of the season in two weeks (Ironman Wisconsin) and would be happy to visit with you prior to race day.

My goal is to run the 5k and feel like the training paid off at the end of the whole thing. I know I will survive, but I want to finish strong. Not worried about winning, my momma already says I’m a winner...even though Ryan went out of his way to ruin that.
