Just got my Bushmaster M4/A3 and want to shoot it.

The manual said to clean the barrel out before shooting to make sure there's not excess oil. Is there anything else I need to look out for before popping off a few fun rounds?

Someone told me that there like Lays potato chips...Can't buy just one. That makes two I've bought in a month and a half. Now I need a RockRiver to go with my Colt and Bushy...lol

You may take the bolt apart- put some trigger grease on the inside of the trigger mech- neither is necessary but I do it anyway.

When I got my Bushmaster Varminter Special I remember the company recommendation of shooting a few rounds, cleaning the barrel, shooting another few rounds, cleaning the barrel et etc.
I had never done this before with any of my other firearms so I cannot tell you it worked. What I can tell you is that mine is as accurate as any other rifle I own so I would definitely follow their recommendations.

I'd get a bore guide and do a proper barrel break-in

I did some reading about breaking in a barrel.

The reason you fire ONE round, and then clean the barrel, followed by shooting another ONE round, followed by cleaning the barrel, etc., is to prevent any gouging of the lands. Apparently there is some form of debris in a barrel when purchased, and you want to get rid of it all without the stuff dinging the lands.

The info I read made me a believer in the process. My explanation above is very anemic. I suggest you Google "breaking in a gun barrel" or something like that so you'll understand the sequence of shooting/cleaning as well as the rationale.

They are accurate for sure. I could not believe how they would group. They shoot like a good bolt gun. The only thing I don't like is looking for the spent brass.

Mine piles then up nicely 5' right and 2' forward of me. I know right where to look when I am coyote hunting for the spent casing.

                    You know what...you're right.

I'm going to take some pics tomorrow at the lease and try to post them over the weekend.

I'm taking out the Colt tonight and going to try out my nightvision scope on some piggies. I had one of my feeders set for a 10:00pm feeding so we'll see what happens.

With any new firearm and especially an AR it is recommended that you field strip, clean and lube it. Getting the sticky, preservative grease out of it will eliminate a lot of issues. With my Bushmasters I found that a good scrubbing of the chamber was needed. Barrel breaking procedures are recommended for chrome moly (BMs match, and varmint barrels) but not necessary for chrome lined IIRC. Have fun!

Yea, I've had my M&P-15 for 2 weeks and ain't shot it yet either... It has an ACOG on it too, and I can't wait to see how it shoots. At first I wasn't going to worry about brass, but in light of all the gubment goin's on lately, think I'll save it JIC... I've got all the stuff for reloading .223 from my Contender head shooting days, so it don't hurt to save the brass I guess...
