I'm shopping for an upgraded trolling motor. I know I want the Minn Kota with Ipilot. I have a Basstracker 175/TF with the 60hp Merc. Which model, shaft length, thrust, 12/24v should I buy?
Thanks, Roby
Somewhere around 60lbs thrust IMO. 24v if you have room for 2 batteries. That and 52" shaft?
The thing about an I pilot is you dont need it super long cause you dont have to bend over to run it. If all else measure the depth you like while the boat is in the water.

You're gonna love remote control!!

Thanks, I have the stock troling motor with 45" shaft, and it does okay. I'm just not sure about what model and to be honest (Terrova 55lb/80lb etc.), I'm not sure if I have space for another battery. I think there is another spot for one. What's the advantage to 24v?

Longer run time. I think a little better torque.
Chances are the wire is already heavy enough. All you need is the jumper to make 24 volts
I had a 62 lb thrust on a 17'5" v hull metal boat with a 50. It was 24v and ran all day and then some. PLENTY of power. My xpress had an 80# and it was 18 long and 92 inches wide with a 90. Also 24v
I’m running the MotorGuide Xi3 70lb on my Bass Tracker 175 and it straight up yanks mine around like a scalded dog. I think 80lbs is way too much IMO. I redid the layout and was able to get a 3rd battery tray in next to my gas tank to run 24v/I believe mine is a 54” shaft (a little long but not really a big deal since I added a quick disconnect mount for the TM.

Agreed. I ran an Xpress 17.5 aluminum boat for fishing tournaments with a motorguide 70lb thrust. There were numerous times i dam near went over the side cause that trolling motor had so much force on that little boat. But I was glad to have that much power as well.

I agree. I am now running the xi3 52lb 12v on my 2007 tracker 175. Early indications are the power is perfect - they have so many power setting compared to the old 5 speed version. I have not tested a full day of running it but could always add a 2nd battery in parallel if needed. Mines a 54 inch shaft which is almost too long. Got it on sale at cabelas for $800.

Sierracharlie out…
That’s a bad feeling - when you reach to grab a hold of something and there’s nothing but air between you and going overboard!
I'd do 45 shaft 80lb 24v. You re gona want more power than to be under powered. If you don't buy one with enough power you ll know it the first time you use it and be upset. You can always buy more power and turn the speed setting lower.
I have a 70 lb. On my SeaArk 200V Coastal. It is an I Pilot, but not the I Pilot Link. Mine is a 54 inch shaft. 24 volt. At the time, to go much bigger I'd have had to go 36 volt. I just didn't want 4 batteries on board. and the 24 seems to do just fine.
For a tin boat like that I would look at 45" shaft 12 volt 55lbs thrust terrova. On my 19' Nitro I am running a 24 volt 80lb thrust Ultrex and it is plenty to fish 2 days in the wind, it weighs double what your tin boat does.
