    A/C question

My unit just started having a hard time keeping up. It cannot cool it to 76 in afternoon, stays around 79. So when we go to bed it is around 78-79, but gets down to 70 by morning.

My wife has birds, so we have more dust. Normally I clean up condenser, in the attic, and then it works normal again. I did my normal cleaning, but it did not help this time.

Low Freon? Any ideas? Thanks for any info

Low on freon and maybe a capacitor

That's the evaporator in the attic..Have you ever cleaned the actual condenser? It's the outside unit.

As hot as it's been, if it gets down to 70 at night, then it's working. Mine runs all day trying to keep up, usually gets to within 3-4 degrees of what thermo is set at.

Full Disclosure: I don't know anything about AC units.

Mine did that a few months ago. Was hoping I had a real slow leak and just need some refrigerant. A/C guy turned the thermostat to "FAN" ( so the compressor doesnt turn on but fan runs ) to dry out the evap coils. As soon as they were dry you could see the oil spot where the coil was leaking...yay....

In the past, if the a/c was able to keep up, then something has happened. do all the above, check the filters, clean the coils on the outside unit, (without bending them, usually using 409 cleaner and soft brush does the trick), clean the evaporator in the attic, CHECK THE FAN, (squirrel cage)! If you see a line of dirt or dust on the edges of the fan, clean them. that would keep the cage from moving the air properly... lastly, have a a/c person check the Freon. hope this helps...

We just had the same issue this past weekend. System was 2.5lb low and the cap was leaking oil too.

If you need an a/c man, I use one near spring that is hungry! call Weston with Price Ac at 936-788-4039. Has done a fantastic job for us in the past...

same thing here, our unit is less than 2 years old but our house gets over 80 during the day and is still at 75-76 at 10pm at night, we leave it on 74 and it runs 24hrs a day. had the installer come back out yesterday and he said he needs to replace the coil, he actually said he thinks the TXV is bad, but replacing the coil will replace the TXV as well and the warranty will cover all the parts. still going to cost me $700 for labor
