UT Austin to provide free tuition

Got email today from Midwestern in Wichita Falls which was one of the schools my daughter applied to but didn't like it. Based on her FAFSA they offered a free, or reduced, meal plan. Was hoping Tech did, but doesn't, because their meal plan is required for freshmen and it's pretty expensive.

Friscopaint is right on the money. This is really non-news. Just UT coming more in line with what other universities are doing; including TAMU and apparently Tech.
Yes but those changes were against what the University wanted. They were wanting more restrictions not less. Cant fault a university for that.

Mine just graduated from TTU and went on a Texas Tomorrow plan
Tuition pre paid monthly since 1990
It still cost another $55K out of my pocket
No student loans which is a good thing
But C'mon
Free tuition is not a free ride
Lots of other costs
Heck living in Austin is expensive enough

There is no perfect system. And I agree with what someone else said that this approach has hurt the University. But in reality, the application of the previous quota system already sent it down the wrong path. What used to be admirable well rounded students (those in band, sports, etc) now have very little chance of getting in because those activities actually lower GPAs. I can only speak to my kids experience coming from the Plano school district. You have to have around a 4.2 GPA to be auto entry. Both my sons were around 4.1 with outstanding SAT and ACT scores. Neither made it in.
They ended up at ATM who I think has a better system. They still have the class rank qualifier but then have another one based on test scores. Texas is still a great University but, they have lost a big part of who they were over the years.Last edited by Rush2Judge; 07-11-2019, 07:52 AM.

That huge school tax check I write every year would say otherwise...
FREE ?????
pffffffftttttttt
If college was free, it would just be added to your huge school tax check and you'd be forced to pay for an additional 4-years of other peoples' schooling.
As a libertarian-minded person, it's hard for me to understand how people can agree with public schools being tax-payer funded, but then not agree with college being funded the same way. IMO - neither should be...

Originally posted by Rush2Judge View PostActually, what they were doing was giving preference to race, gender, income etc. The lawsuit (which actually involved the law school) was about this exact thing. Someone with seemingly higher qualifications (grades and test scores) was rejected over someone with lesser qualifications but of a more "diverse" background. The school lost and now we have a mix of both. The auto entry is set very high at top 6% and room is left for discretion on the rest.

Texas would ditch the top 6% automatic admission and 75% quota if that were allowed by the legislature.
