We're going to Deadwood S.D. next month for a week, Airbnb in town. Checking area out for retirement and snowbird to coast in the winter. Rapid City has an airport but flights from dfw were expensive, we're driving.

You can fly direct to Cheyenne from DFW,or daily flights from Denver to Laramie. Lots of cabins in the Snowy Range, NF and private. Centennial Wyoming or Saratoga are neat small towns, Centennial right at the base of the mountains.
Fly into Jackson and you'll find pricier lodging but much nicer.
Several guest ranches across the state to look into as well.

Spent part of our vacation near Boulder last summer. Very nice & lots to do. You almost can't go wrong in Colorado as long as you don't spend too much time in Denver.

Personally prefer Wyoming, but have only seen the East side of state. Seeing the West side is on the to-do list.
