Can anyone tell me the major differences, pros and cons, and recommendations on which griddle is better versus the Walmart (blackstone) or Academy (outdoor gourmet)...or are they close to the same quality? Thanks.

Walmart VS Academy griddle question?

I have a 36" Blackstone and my neighbor has the Outdoor Gourmet. He went with the larger size (48" I think) for what reason I have no idea? The 36" is plenty big for whatever you want to cook, IMO. I think the cabinet/cradle is better built on the Blackstone, it's not as flimsy to me. Both will cook food the same.
I know the Blackstone had some grease drip issues in the past but there are plenty of fixes for that online and the new ones have a rear drip drain. The griddle is a great tool for cooking, especially breakfast, burgers and Hibachi style.
One pro tip, go to Walmart and find one that the top is all rusted up from being out in the patio area and get them to knock some off the price. A sander or wire wheel for 15 minutes will clean it right up, season it right and you are good to go.

One thing I forgot to mention, I would not recommend the surround that you can purchase separately to give you more workspace along the top. It looks good but makes the unit have a much larger foot print. My BIL has one and he has melted a lot of trays as it gets pretty hot from the rising heat.
