Eagles Nest, NM- Elizabethtown Ruins, Cimarron Canyon, and the state park
Good for a weekend or couple of days. Being in that area, you may want to head towards Pagosa Springs or Durango. After the hike go to the ski resort and ride bikes down the mountain. Make a journey of it and head to Utah and hit Moab and Zion.

I think you had a good idea up front. Pagosa springs has several trails. I'm not sure how far the beetle kill has spread from the pass but north of town are some short hikes and long ones.
A neat overnight trip is to take the train out of Durango up to the needleton stop. Hike the 6 miles to Chicago basin, hike out when ready and catch the train back. You won't be alone but it's a neat trip an while you gain about 3000 feet it's over 6 miles.

Been taking my family to Red River in the summer since 2012. Some good trails south of town. I’ve done middle fork- very doable- alpine lake at the end. Lost lake shares some of the same trail, further in and also a lake. Goose lake is a long hike- hiking trail is different route than the Jeep road, but end in same place. Fun to summit Gold Hill above the lake. Stunning views.
My son thinks it’s awesome to climb the ski mountain and sneak on the lift to ride back down.
Plenty of stocker trout to catch in and around town.

I’m not sure when you plan to go, but just as info, a lot Colorado high country got a really late snow dump recently. Most of the passes are still closed around Ouray, Creed, Silverton, Lake City....etc. I have a friend that is nearly snowed in at Lake City right now. I’ve been told north of Pagosa up higher is still closed/very deep. The state reports 90-100 foot snow drifts in the Animas Forks Valley north of Silverton right now.
