    Matagorda Fishing

Heading down to Matagorda for a few days this Saturday. Surf forecast isn’t looking very good as of now. We don’t have a boat and know the wading access is pretty limited without one, but are there any options other than the pier and jetty around the area? May look into a last minute guided trip as well. Any things close by to do other than the beach? Thanks!

Nothing but beach in Matagorda. There are some spots you can drive to for wading if you have 4x4 and don't mind going off the beaten path.

See if Run-n-Gun has any openings for a bay trip. They’ve been slaying big trout.

If you have a 4x4 and are feeling a little adventurous you can cross the dunes at many places along the beach then once on the back side there are many trails to access the leeward side of the island which is east matagorda bay.

Be sure to take some basic recovery equipment and don't stop when crossing the soft sand. I've done it numerous times in a half ton 4x4. Don't believe I'd try it in a diesel unless you have lots of tire.

Man it's going to blow hard this weekend. It's 17mph right now in Matagorda and it's going to blow harder.

          Be safe.

            Where are you staying?

You could easily get the line pulled in the river on some dead shrimp. Maybe some school trout at night under the lights.

Best wading option is as mentioned. Drive and hike. Other than that kayak

Thanks for the tips. We’re staying in a house Bahia de Matagorda off the beach access road.

If the wind is howling and the surf is up you should check the tides. It is not uncommon for water to run up to the dunes creating an interesting driving situation.

I've seen it numerous times where trucks got sunk in the sand when the tide came in while guys were fishing on the other side of the dunes.

Depending on how far down you go the more prepared you need to be. It can get pretty Western past the cut. 4X4 a must IMO.

How long are you going to be in Matagorda? Sat and Sun are going to be windy but it's going to start dropping Monday with it getting better all week as the week goes on.

There are some options you can try. 3 mile cut will hold good water in the wind. You need 4x4 to reach it. You might consider renting kayaks and fishing the marsh off beach road. You can fish the river in several different locations but it'll probably be slow. You can go down cemetery road and fish by the bridge, might catch a flounder or two there. You can drive down to Oyster Lake and fish down there. On a south or southeast wind it'll be fairly protected, if it keeps blowing southwest forget it.

Another one if you rent kayaks is to paddle across the river and drag over into Parker's Cut. It'll hold good water even in high winds.

We’ll be down through Thursday. Was hoping the wind and surf would lay a day or two to try some top waters in the surf but it’s not looking very promising.

Give up on the surf, it's not going to happen.

Where is cemetery road in matagorda? I was looking for it and the bridge and couldn't find it.
