    Pagosa Springs UTV trails

We will be in Pagosa Springs over the 4th and I have a few questions for the green screen.

    1. Are dirt/trail motorcycle allowed on the UTV/ATV trails?
    2. Which are the most scenic or must do trails in the surrounding area?
    3. For those who trailer their personal machines, is a back country riding permit required?

    Thank you in advance.

    1. I have been two years and we have seen motorcycles on all the trails we were on with a sxs.

2 Many ways to get there but spend the day making your way to Platora and eat a burger at Skyline Lodge and come back a different way. It will take you 3/4 of a day. South East of town there is a trail/Rd Called Blue Creek. It was a nice easy ride but pretty.

    3. You will need a Co OHV sticker. Got mine at WalMart.

Most UTV trails on the National forest are open to any 4x4 vehicle. Basically there are no trails a jeep cant go on that a UTV can. Also most of these are actually roads and not trails, but there are some pretty gnarly 4x4 "roads". All these trails/roads are open to 4 wheeler/dirt bike/etc. There are a bunch of trails that are open to any vehicle under a certain width (Maybe 52"????) that a UTV isn't allowed on. You do need an OHV sticker from Colorado P&W. You can get it at any way mart or sporting goods store.

We usually ride on the other side of the pass, but there are TONNNNS of roads to ride on all over the area. Just make sure you go to the hot springs when you're in town at night.

I been going to Creede for around 15 years now and been elk hunting it for the last 4 years. I have been all over that country and have yet to see or find a way to Pagosa Springs by trail riding. If you find a way please let me know I'd love to do it. Meaning that in the nicest way possible also. Not trying to sound like a horses a**

Good to know, had a conversation with a guy that made it sound like you could, but I know that just because someone said it doesn’t mean it’s true....unless of course you read it on the internet, then you know it’s true!
Is there a good site for trail maps, or an app with loaded maps?
            Thanks!

                1. allowed on any trail or forest road that a UTV would be allowed on. There is signage. Wear sturdy boots, rocky country on some of the roads and might prove tough to get a foot down flat. Your skills are likely better than mine so your mileage may vary.
                2. Sorry, can't help there but the whole area is beautiful.
                3. Yes, you will need a permit. sold wherever hunting licenses are sold or available online. Make and color of machine is all you need if memory serves.

Elwood is the most scenic. Some trails over by the falls to but don’t think they go up to Elwood, been a while and I’d have to look at a map.

This is one of our favorites. Pack a lunch and have a picnic at the top. Go to the visitors center in Pagosa and buy the tag that allows you to ride the trails and they will give you a map of different places to go, most are restricted by width.

Yes. Any trail that UTVs are allowed on so are single track machines. Best trail in Pagosa is the Elwood Pass Trail, then take it anywhere you want. We will be there with our machines that week as well.

Just for a heads up. Elwood may not be passable this 4th. This late snow pack is going to have the east fork roaring, and it may not be passable at the first two crossings. I’m fully expecting to have to turn around, but hoping that’s not the case.

I’m pretty sure you can take some of the roads that turn off Elwood Pass to South Fork, but not so sure about Creede. If you have a Droid in the family download the OnX OffRoad app. It’s not out yet for iPhone unfortunately, but shall be soon.

Check the Motor Vehicle Use Map, MVUM, for open roads and restrictions. It is free from the FS.
Denver tv keeps talking about the high snowpack all over Colorado, I would call the local ranger district and inquire about roads and trails before you go out. Some trails will have width restrictions.

Yelp and Wolf creek area tends to traditionally lead the pack, no pun intended
