    Catching Shad

So I know I have asked this before but I still suck at it. We have bought the bait tank the shad saver and have mastered keeping what we catch alive. BUT we can not seem to be consistent at catching them. So we are going to Lake Whitney Saturday morning and need help on where to catch shad. You guys hit up marinas early in morning or shallow flats or what? HELP!!!

Most people go to aquilla and catch bait for Whitney but I bielieve it’s illegal to transport bait now. Whitney creek is usually good for bait.

Start off cast netting in the mouth of coves and work your way to the back. Muddy bottom coves are best. If that doesn't work find a point on the down wind side of the lake where the waves are causing the water to be dirty (this works in clear lakes).

Next try sandy points or humps.

Make sure you call ahead and ask about Whitney...It was like 20ft high last weekend. Hate to have it closed off if you make a trip.

We always catch them on either rocks or concrete early in the morning in the shade. Anywhere algae grows.

Its open and water is falling. Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. Sucks driving 1.5hrs to fish and spend half the day trying to get enough shad to catch fish lol.

Get there before daylight and cast under lights.

This is where we always found them. I have seen them start running early in the morning before the sun comes up around rocks and concrete. Power plant lakes work good to if you have access.

Lakes never close. Ramps might not be open though!

They actually close the lakes. At least I know they close some around here when flooding.

I guess technically you could get on them but they'd bust you pretty quick.

Yes they do. Usually when it’s really hazardous.

Yes they do. LCRA shuts down some of the highland lakes during floods for days and weeks at a time.
