i would say to look at the new jeep wrangler jl. can easily sleep in it, no better vehicle for off road or in snow, and the new ones are getting about 24 mpg hwy.

I'm on my second Subaru for hunting and commuting. First was a Forester for 6 years with no problem at 120k. On my 2nd year with the outback. Right at 40k and no issues. I like the outback better cuz the smoother ride and the back has more room to stretch out and sleep.

For affordable, Nissan is hard to beat. I have had Rogues, Frontiers and currently have 2-Titans and 1 Armada. The Frontier is an awesome little truck MPG will be in the jeep range if not a touch better on the highway. I think Rogue has an AWD but I have no clue on its ability. The Frontier and Titans have no issues on PINS and the mud I go in. There is a Subaru Crosstrek here in town a guy has fixed up pretty nice for off-road, it looks sharp. For low 20k's I would check it out for sure

V6? Think the 4 is supposed to get 32mpg.

Take a look at the VW Touareg. I almost talked my wife into one with the v6 diesel this past December, but she preferred the look of her Toyota 4runner TRD instead. Imo, you get a lot more luxury, bells n whistles, safety features and better mpg's in a 2 /3 yr old Touareg than a new Toyota 4runner for about the same money.
