    Texture over paneling

Just curious if anyone has ever spray textured over paneling and then painted it?
Whats longevity, will it separate? Any hints to look for?
My FIL is doing this to one of his rent houses instead of pulling paneling and sheet-rocking. Will it work ok?

I don't know about texturing over paneling. I used Kilz and then painted over it and had good luck with that.

Goto Sherwin Williams and tell them you want paint to cover paneling. Paint first then texture it will hold up.

Just curious, why would you want to texture over paneling?

I overlayed ours with 1/4" drywall and tape/bed/textured/painted that on the house I sold a few years ago. Worked out great

FIL is remodeling a rent house for his new tenant and brown paneling look is not as modern of a look as the tenant is looking for. So he told her that he would texture it and paint dover white.
I didn't think it was the best idea and would like to hear other ways or options.

Gotcha! As one other guy said, I would use Killz primer, and then paint over it.

I have used a texture paint that was made for this. It rolled on real thick with a special roller and looks just like drywall texture when finished. It has been on 10+ years in my bathroom and still looks great.

We textured then painted. Held up well for 5-7 years. The groves started popping off at that time. The face held up well

                  Helped the look a lot

Primer it first then texture then paint would probably do best

I assume he checked to make sure there wasn’t sheet rock behind. Most paneling has it behind it.

My guy filled panel lines first, then textured over. Painted a dark grey and it worked out great.

Personally I think painted paneling looks terrible. If it were me I would put 14" sheet rock over the paneling, float, texture and paint. It is a couple extra steps, but it will look good when don't. When I remodeled my house I took out the paneling and hung sheet rock, but if it was a rent house I would put 1/4" over it

Guess it depends on what look you are going for. If they expect painted textured panel to look like drywall, they will be wrong. We tried texture/painting the panel first. Didn't like it so ended up removing the panel and installing drywall.

Float the grooves, texture and paint. We’ve done it twice now and done right, you can’t tell the difference.

thanks guys, I'll pass all this info on.
I agree, I would sheetrock. House built in 1927, so its old. No sheetrock except on ceilings. sounds like kilzs, then texture then paint. FIL is cheap, so cost is a big factor.
