Heck of a fight, especially in a kayak. Way to go! So, you were fishing straight down?

Great video and a great catch! Did you get him weighed? He will scare 20 # I bet. Man those suckers caught in a clean flowing river like that are about the best eating fish that I've ever tried! Never targeted them with rod n reel, but I gotta do that!!
What hook did you use? and did you fish right on the bottom? I know fishing for them on a trot line, I always had my best luck fishing about half way between surface of the water and the bottom for op's n blues...

                      Looks 14-16 pounds to me.

You need to get a big one on R&R Use a thin 10/0 circle hook. Fish in a cove in 9-12' deep water. Basically right before dark they head up to the backs of coves to start eating. Narrow coves they get funneled.

Yes about 8ft between him and I. Big live perch for bait.

That is great! I've caught them out of the Red River while fishing from the bank, but I've always wanted to use my kayak and get real close to the log jams. Thanks for posting.
