I know what you are talking about. I had a blower that was 20+ years old, tried to revive several times but finally just gave up.
I would suggest either an Echo or a Stihl. I have a echo and it has been great so far.

Buy a Stihl. Price might surprise you when compared to the big box store stuff.

Get a Stihl. The cost really isnt that much higher, but the performance is.

Even Stihl is not what it once was. I have a few saws and trimmers. NOTHING is built like it used to be. IF you get a couple seasons of regular use be happy.
My Echo trimmer is on it's 4th season.. Even my Stihl can't do that.
