    Any Kohler Standby Generator Mechanics?

I have 20kW Kohler generator at the house hooked up to a 150gallon propane tank. When under a load of runs perfect. During the weekly exercise cycle it surges very bad.....imagine working the throttle from closed to wide open every 1.3 seconds (I timed it).

The generator is 19 months old and I did the install. It’s been doing this about 4 months. When the power goes off and the ATS trips it runs like a champ. It only surges during the exercise cycle with no load.

Do I have a propane pressure problem? I would think if I didn’t have enough pressure/volume it wouldn’t run well supplying the whole house.

If it is the composite enclosure you might need to install some vent tubes from the demand regulator (inside the generator) to outside the unit if those are not currently installed. If they are currently installed make sure a bug didn't clog it up.

But most likely you will need to call a dealer. They can plug in and make some adjustments in the software that will smooth it out at low speed operation.

Mine is fine...but now I will go check vents....we had to run 8+ hours last weekend...no issues

Alot of the time, surging, or searching is caused by governor issues. Could also be rack position sensor, could be the AVR as well. As mentioned above, it could be starving as well, for either fuel or air. Should have some kind of fuel regulator going into it, that could be it.
I know that is a lot of things to look into, sorry I can't be of more help than that. My generator experience is Wartsila.
Forgot, could be the mag pickups as well.

I would look at either a sticky rack, or Governor first, since it runs good under load.
