    Ram 2016 DEF Issues

Seeing if anyone else has any similar issues. Truck only has 26,000 miles and was headed from Corpus to Houston on Sunday when I noticed check engine light was on but truck running fine. Monday started getting error messages that DEF system abnormality and to have it checked at dealer. Today I received a error message saying same thing and also that I had 150 miles left to get to dealer and checked or the max speed would be 5 mph. I have only put maybe 5 jugs of def since I purchased new and dealer is telling me today that if it’s the pump it’s covered by warranty but if it’s moisture in the system and has to be flushed it’s not warranty. Does DEF go bad over time?

I’ve heard that it can degrade but I wouldn’t think at that fast of a rate.

My def pump went out on my 15 F250. 1k for a new pump (not covered but BS Autonation warranty) or 900$ for full delete. Hmmmmmm.........

Yes. But only when it sit in sun light. The water in it evaporates. The dealer should be able to test it for u. This is what we use.

I don't know about the pickups; but the big trucks (class 8) have a DEF filter, maybe see if that is the problem; however the DEF filter on the class 8 usually last about 75-100 thousand miles.

sometimes I just wonder if the ecm on these vehicles isn't programmed to throw a code every once in a while just to get your azz in the shop and make them some money.

If it’s the filter usually the dash will tell you, if not the code will.

I had the same issue. My message was , “Service DEF System. See Dealer”

I got the check engine light as well.

Def pump went out at 31k. They checked my fluid as well and said it was good. If it was bad I would have argued my butt off and filed a complaint until they fixed my pump.... or possibly just said to hell with it and delete the bastage.

Your gonna get a lot of delete the MF'er here but always got my def from a truck stop pump and zero issues for years. From what I've heard yes it can go bad, people have gotten bad blue def from walmart causing trucks to go into limp mode.

Dealer confirmed today that pump was bad (covered by warranty) however they need to drain tank and flush system and I have to pay for the 6 gallons of DEF that has to be purchased from dealer for $103! Lol. I know it will void my warranty but any more issues with this DEF system and I’m just going to delete!

I would not be paying for DEF. That’s BS. It’s being fixed under a warranty and that should include the price of the DEF refill. It’s different when it’s routine maintenance like an oil change. This was cause by a faulty piece of equipment.

Next it will be the exhaust filters, we've gone completely away from diesel due to def/exhaust issues! Oh! When that light says you only x-amount of miles or starts before you go into limp mode, they ain't playin', it sucks when you have limp from the field back to town @5 mph for 15+\- miles!

They’re trying to screw you. FCA will give you 5 gallons of DEF with the pump replacement. I just had mine done

Definitely expensive. Mine craped out crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge heading into Baltimore MD.
$4800 covered by warranty. The converter alone was around $2800.00

Picked it up from dealer today and drove back home to Corpus with no issues. After raising hell with them I still had to pay $107 for 6 gallons of DEF! Their explanation was that the pump went out due to bad def fluid!!! I asked them where am I suppose to get good def from and his response was from the dealer! Lol. I will never use Clear Lake Chrysler ever again, I will let it hit limp mode and drive 5 mph to another dealer.
