    When do axis deer shed?

I have heard several things from people about when axis deer shed, and I thought I would ask you guys. My wife and I are buying a house in the hill country and there are tons of axis deer out there. I am putting a deer feeder out there too. I have heard it depends on the bucks mom, and also depends on the dominant doe as to when the bucks shed. I want to find some sheds out there and see bucks in hard horn and some with velvet nubs, so school me please. Thanks

Unlike Whitetail, Axis can shed anytime of the year. No rhyme or reason with them. June is predominantly their rut though.

So basically I can find sheds at my feeder year round, I had heard there are two rugs so I thought there might be two main times for them to shed, so we will see

I agree with everyone above. Axis breed year round, so they’ll be dropping at different times. There are some more peak rut times though, like AC alluded to. In a single trail cam picture, I’ve seen a nubber, half grown velvet, full grown velvet, and a hard horned buck.

Looks like we were posting at the same time! As for the two main rut times, on the ranch I’m on, one is in the summer, and one in the late fall. During the fall, axis, whitetail and sika are all rutting about the same time. It’s an exciting month!

They are fairly easy to find because they are so big!
Yes I too have heard they shed around their birthday.

The spots on the right front shoulder, show day, spots over the rear quarter show month. Spots on the dark stripe down spine gives year

I believe Axis can be grouped into two main groups. Winter hard horned bucks, and Summer hard horned bucks. The winter bucks follow closely to a whitetail's calendar I believe. Summer bucks don't get hard horned until April/May. From my observation, the majority of bucks are hard horned during the Summer. Using this info, I would say some bucks shed in spring, and others in late fall.
