    Mechanic/Electrical Help

My wife’s car instrument panel stopped working when the motor is running. It is a 2014 Mazda CX-9. When you turn the key on (not start) all the gauge needles max out and then appear to read correct. When you start the the car, the instrument panel goes dead. No speed, tach, fuel mileage, trip... Everything goes dead. Even the blinker does not indicate or click in the panel, even though they are working. I’ve checked the fuses in the glove box and under the hood, they all seem fine. I pulled the driver side kick panel and did not see anything obvious with the BCM. Am I overlooking something simple?

Sorry for the long post, but any help is appreciated.

Could have a relay out. See if you have one for whats not working and swap it out with another of the same kind if you have one. When a relay goes out, nothing downstream of it gets power.

It might need an ignition switch. Search a Mazda forum for answers

I thought about that but the instrument panel gets power/works until you actually start the engine.

Your instrument cluster could be going out. Or you could have a loose connector

My f250 was doing the same thing and it was a loose connector in the main wiring harness

I’ve been looking but not finding anything conclusive. Maybe I’ll try to post a video of what it’s doing when I get home from work.

Do you have a sun roof? They reportedly have an issue with the sunroof drain clogging and then getting water on the BCM which causes it to screw up. Any moisture in your floor pans?

It does have a sunroof, but I looked at the BCM and did not see anything obvious and the carpet and insulation in the area was dry. If I can’t find anything I might replace the BCM anyway.

That particular car only has one Body Control Module?

I believe the BCM has to "communicate" to the ECM. Hard to look at a module and tell if it is good or bad. I might suggest taking it to a good independent shop that has a quality diagnostic system and let them do some bi directional testing. They should be able to activate the cluster with the scanner as well.

When replacing a BCM on a Mazda it might need to be relearned to the main Module, this may have to be done with a diagnostic tool.

Yea, the more I look into this it seems no matter what I’ll have to take it somewhere, even if I replace the right part I don’t have the capabilities to reprogram. I’m going to double check for loose connections but I doubt that’s the case.

Certain new cars that are out now require the headlight to be relearned if it is replaced.

Ha! I wouldn’t doubt! I just hate being forced to pay what they charge.
