Do it myself.. normally pretty easy if you stay on top of chemicals, algae blooms, cleaning, organics, etc.

$150/month. Comes every week and includes chemicals.

The biggest difference is that my kids can use the pool without me having to be involved.

DIY is easy. Probably average 20 minutes a week of actual work and $300 a year on chemicals - and that's on the high side ...

Ok guys, I showed my wife some estimates locally and some comments from here I will do it myself and will pay myself 175 a month , the chemically will come out of house budget. Since I’m retired I’ve got no excuse to not learn to do it myself

I have absolutely no use for a pool, but when we bought our farm, there was a very nice pool in the back yard... Folks we bought it from had a nice young man come by every Thursday and do whatever needed to be done... The pool looked very nice and since moving in, we have continued this service. My daughter and my grandsons LOVE the pool and have already been in it a couple times this year!! I don't touch it and it's always perfect like what Curt referred to. The pool guy does everything and provides whatever that is needed... We pay $125/month and every Thursday there's a sticky note on the back door from "Charlie" telling us what he did and if we need to add water or something. When he "shocks" the pool (whatever the heck that is), he leaves a note to tell us to stay out of the pool until the next day... Because of this service, I don't mind the pool and have grown to even like it a bit myself, especially after getting off the mower or tractor!!

I kind of got forced into taking care of ours last year and at first was doing whatever leslie's were telling me to do and I was having a difficult time keeping it right. I then read the link I posted and learned what I was doing wrong and got it under control quickly and now it's easy to take care of. Coupling of things to remember the pool guys usually spend a hour a week cleaning and adding chemicals and they are making money. The pool chemical stores make money on selling people chemicals and they make money if your pool is always a little out off. I still take a sample to leslie's more to get phosphate readings than anything else.

Most don’t spend anywhere near an hour there. I worked for a pool service in college for a summer and we cleaned 20 pools a day, some of them being huge apartment complexes. You do the math.

There is a lot of truth to figuring out what it needs and it will become way easier to take care of. Think of it like a digestive system. If someone is lactose intolerant and keeps eating dairy, they will constantly be needing medicine to treat the symptoms rather than the cause. Get it figured out and things run smoothly.

I don’t think the pool supply company guys intentionally tell you the wrong stuff to make more $, I just think they are inexperienced and go off their little flow chart from their 1 hour “training session.”

My teen son or me take care of mine. Spend a lot of time this time of year. We have a lot of live oaks so leaves the last month and pollen now. Otherwise not much time the rest of the year.

Probably $300-400 range on chemicals. We have a salt pool and it is pretty low maintenance but most of the chemical cost is on phosfree or Perfect Weekly to keep the phosphates down.
