A friend of mine had a heater installed on his pool. He ran it for about three weeks in the winter after the install. The first gas bill was around a grand if I remember correctly. He never used it again.

I once attempted replacing our 400 unit and my wife about lost it when she found out I was messing around with gas lines. After having the gas shut off and still smelling it, I dug down and found that the galvanized pipe was corroded under ground level.
I paid an outrageous amount to a pool company to replace the gas line with non-metallic pipe and hook it up to the heater which didn't work. Then I switched out the circuit board behind the heater controls myself and got it running. Heater lasted one more season and rusted out. (salt pool) I ended up buying a new one and installing myself. All that was with existing gas line and electric run to it so probably easier than what you are doing.

Just ordered a new heater for our pool. We got several bids and we decided to order it ourselves and have the pool guy install it for $500.00. We ordered a Haywood 400BTU for something like $2,300.00 on amazon with free delivery. Going that route saved us about $700.00. Our situation is different as we already had a heater and the piping and controls are already in place.
One thing to consider is make sure the heater you buy works with your controls so you can control the heater from inside your house.
Good luck to you.

My wife is a swim instructor and she is in the water all day. My pool temp stays in the 90’s.Last edited by Roy D Mercer; 03-26-2019, 02:13 PM.
