    Anchorage to Fairbanks road trip

    Looking for experienced advice

We want to do a road trip this July or August with sightseeing, hiking, a day or two of guided salmon fishing, etc

Drive to Fairbanks and maybe take train back to anchorage

    Thanks for any insights

No experience with things along that drive as I have not been to that part of Alaska yet. There’s a few Alaska residents on here that could give you some really good advice, Hughiam is a member on here I know of for sure, I’ve asked him about some things before.

Depending on which type of salmon, or other fish for that matter, you can save yourself a big chunk of change by fishing on your own instead of with a guide.

Haven't been to Fairbanks yet. But, have taken the train from Anchorage to Danali. Fun ride.

It's been a few years since I've done that drive but it used to take me about 6 hours (I wasn't stopping anywhere though (I lived in Anchorage/Eagle River for 8 years). You leave Anchorage on the Glenn Highway and then take the Parks Highway through Wasilla. If you're interested, you can check out the Iditarod headquarters there. There isn't much outside of Wasilla (except for scenery) until you get to Denali National Park. There are busses that will take you into the park (you won't be allowed to drive in yourself). Fairbanks is about 1 1/2 hours north of the park. Take a short ride down the Richardson Highway to North Pole, AK. You can visit the Santa Claus house. They leave the Christmas decorations up all year long in North Pole (I lived there for 3 years).

There are a couple members that live up there. Hughiam (someone mentioned above) and I think Merc lives there also. They may be able to give you some more current information.

I went August of 17. Flew to Anchorage and rented a 24' RV and drove all over. Went to Denali, on to Fairbanks and back down the other side.Their hiways are like our farm roads. You may run into road construction since the summer is all the time they have to do that.

I have heard the train is pretty neat. I had a milepost, but gave it to another TBH'er who is headed that way.

If you catch Denali on a clear day...count your blessings. Take the bus all the way to the end. Lots of photo ops.

          Very pretty country.

One stop that hasn't been mentioned that we enjoyed was Talkeetna. Neat little town and we went fishing there and didn't catch a bunch but had a great time anyway.

Lived there for about four years and made the drive more times than I remember. As mentioned earlier, not much in between. I would check our what glaciers are available to visit. There used to be a small store half way that had great pics of a moose stomping the hell.out of a parked car. I'm waiting for Farmers Insurance to do a commercial for it.

Either way, enjoy the drive. Visit Sanat Claus house in North Pole just outside of Fairbanks. A lot of interesting stuff in there.

Pretty much all been said before just take your time, and a good set of glass (if you see sheep or something and stop to look or take pictures, get clear off the side of the road). Fishing isn't hard, but I've only targeted grayling up there off the Denali highway (dirt road) and done all my salmon off the kenai peninsula.

                Sent from somewhere
