Question on Seismic Survey

If your land is not currently leased for minerals would you allow a company to do a seismic survey? They leased the place next to me where I have minerals and were going to lease this place as well. Then they didn't.

I got a letter last week from a company wanting to do Seismic testing on my land.

Possibly. Wouldn't allow it for free, that's for sure. As a geologist, we often rely on seismic from 3rd part acquisition. Having seismic available for others to purchase may allow interested companies to decide whether or not they want to lease mineral rights.

Ask them for a copy of the processed data (among other things, including damages).

If they want something from you they’ll ask. If said company dropped communication with you about surveying or leasing I’d forget about it.

I had it done on a place I owned 25 years ago. They said they would pay $25 a hole and only needed to shoot one hole on my 10 acres. I got home before they left and saw that they had shot two holes. I braced them about the extra hole and they paid up but I'm pretty sure if I hadn't caught it they would have gotten a free hole.

Haven't seen a seismic company to this day that will close gates. It never was any of their people that left them open when asked about them being left open.

Had this done on our place this past summer. $10/acre and they cut lanes for me double the width that they normally would on my request. They kept the gate shut and kept me in the loop regarding their progress. I wish they would come back this year.
