    Polaris Ranger Help

I was at the lease this weekend doing some offseason work and had something strange happen to my ranger. I noticed earlier in the day it was having a hard time shifting into it's highest gear. I then started to smell burnt rubber (automatically thought about the belt slipping). I did not drive through any deep water at all only little puddles hear and there. I immediately started to head back to the truck and all of a sudden I heard a POP and it sounded like something was thrashing around. I figured if the belt broke then I wouldn't be able to go anywhere due to Polaris being belt driven am I right??? When I put it in gear it takes a lot more gas to get going, almost like it is under an extreme load. When I get going and pick up a little speed it the thrashing sound comes back and it sounds like I have a flat tire going 70mph down the highway. Anyone have any suggestions or experience this in the past? I am going to take a the belt housing off tomorrow.

Belt may have partially came apart. Burning rubber was more than likely the belt slipping. Always better to run in low if pulling a load or right after going through some deep water.

Just a starting point....have you checked to see if you broke an axel. The flat tire sound could be axel flopping around inside boot. Almost sounds like you have a slipping belt and a broke axel. Just my 2 cents after fixing a bunch of mud riding machines. Grab those axles and give them a shake.
Next thing I would check would be a bearings...Jack it up and jiggle the tires.

Sounds like belt coming apart to me as well. There is a red drain plug on belt cover you could remove and see if rubber debris is in it which would likely confirm the belt coming apart. Keep us posted.

My belt busted about 6 months ago. Except for getting to the bolts to remove the cover nothing to replacing it. Cost around $100.

Probably the belt, but if you have a crew it may be a bearing on the prop shaft going to the front diff. There is a bearing in a rubber grommet on the crews under the front seat. Mine locked up on me last year and spun the rubber grommet out.

Polaris is notorious for belts breaking -

                        Polaris

Never had a belt break. On my second Polaris and it pulls utility trailers and loads of feed. Gets worked hard. I would have a hard time buying another brand of side by side.

When just driving around at slow speeds, keep it in low, if you drive it in high, the belt will heat up and stretch, hence the belt coming apart.

2011 800 Crew run it very often and have never had a belt break.

                            But thanks for sharing.

I always kept a spare belt in case I ever had one brake. The key is to keep it in low when driving at slow speeds or pulling a trailer or load. Lots of good info on this thread.
