Huntin mishaps and pure bad luck.

So on Sunday I went out coyote callin and had two come in on the first stand. I shot the first one and saw the second one take off and stop behind some sagebrush so I called her back out. I had to move a little to get a better shot. She stops broadside and I squeeze the trigger. No dirt kicks up,the coyote didn't run off. Instead she trots to the right and stops so I shoot again. And again I see nothing but a coyote standing there. I worked the bolt and she takes off at a trot behind a wall of grass and sagebrush and yucca plants scattered about so I couldn't get a shot. She hit my wind and runs like I had shot at her.

Yesterday I went back out to see what could have happened. As it turns out I had been sitting in a slight depression in the ground which automatically put me at a lower vantage point. I had remembered seeing grass through my scope in front of me but after dropping the first coyote I figured I'd just be shooting over or through a few blades of grass so I didn't think anything of it. As it turns out there was a berm I hadn't noticed. I was looking through the grass in my scope but I was putting bullets into the berm. The coyote acted like it hadn't been shot at because the last two bullets didn't make it 10 feet past the end of the barrel.

Fast forward to today I went out after work and heard a few coyotes howling and then I heard another over a hill not far from me. So I started talking back and eventually got one to come to the call. It stopped at 125 yards and I put the crosshairs on its chest and squeezed the trigger.....click. I had forgot to load my rifle. I cycled the bolt and by the time I got it loaded as slowly and with the least amount of movement as possible the coyote had moved into thicker cover with a head shot being the only option. As I squeezed the trigger I noticed the coyote start to move but I was already committed to the shot. So I did and of course shot where the coyote used to be. I never saw it again.

I don't know if I'm cursed or what's going on but I've sure had a string of bad luck. I've never ran into problems like this before. All the sudden everything that can go wrong is going wrong.

Correction....I haven't ran across this type of luck while huntin before. The bad luck itself is normal.

That would have been at least a $50 bill in my pocket had I hit fur. If missing doesn't hurt bad enough that don't help much.

You didn’t notice dirt being shot 10ft in front of you?

It never kicked any dirt up. Not that I saw anyway. When I say it was a berm it was more of a grass covered hill. But essentially it was a really well hidden berm.

I feel yeah, I haven’t legitimately been able to call one of my leases. First time out I dropped my gun off the high rack, second time out my scanning light mount broke, and the third attempt I sat on a fence line looking back into the property, which fence line is on a county road a couple and their dog walk by.

Dang man, you're really not having much better luck. On the bright side you haven't called any in and educated them there yet. I think I can still get the first one I missed when I shot the hill. The second one I'm thinking is gonna be there until next Winter. Maybe by then it'll have forgotten about the incident somewhat or at least made more coyotes that aren't educated.

There’s no way it didn’t kick dirt up unless you were shooting a pellet gun lol

I won’t call this bad luck. I’ll call this elderly man losing his mojo

My coyotes are so educated the can probably run the foxpro themselves.

$25 to $30. I was guessing low since I have averaged $25 on the carcass.

Could be.lol it had to of kicked up dirt but I guess there was just enough recoil I didn't notice it. I was shooting a 22-250. That second shot I thought "Man that hit something solid.".....It was solid alright. Solid dirt.

The ones around here are slowly becoming that way. That one today sure didn't stick around after the shot. The bullet did make it to where it was standing.

Oh I plan on it. I have to redeem myself after all that.

I had to laugh after I realized what I had done. The first one hit the ground instantly after I shot so can you imagine the confusion when I shot the second time and the coyote was looking around like "Wow! What was that noise?" After the second shot it probably heard me say something to the effect of "What the frick is going on?"......something like that, give or take a few words.lol
