So on Sunday I went out coyote callin and had two come in on the first stand. I shot the first one and saw the second one take off and stop behind some sagebrush so I called her back out. I had to move a little to get a better shot. She stops broadside and I squeeze the trigger. No dirt kicks up,the coyote didn't run off. Instead she trots to the right and stops so I shoot again. And again I see nothing but a coyote standing there. I worked the bolt and she takes off at a trot behind a wall of grass and sagebrush and yucca plants scattered about so I couldn't get a shot. She hit my wind and runs like I had shot at her.
Yesterday I went back out to see what could have happened. As it turns out I had been sitting in a slight depression in the ground which automatically put me at a lower vantage point. I had remembered seeing grass through my scope in front of me but after dropping the first coyote I figured I'd just be shooting over or through a few blades of grass so I didn't think anything of it. As it turns out there was a berm I hadn't noticed. I was looking through the grass in my scope but I was putting bullets into the berm. The coyote acted like it hadn't been shot at because the last two bullets didn't make it 10 feet past the end of the barrel.
Fast forward to today I went out after work and heard a few coyotes howling and then I heard another over a hill not far from me. So I started talking back and eventually got one to come to the call. It stopped at 125 yards and I put the crosshairs on its chest and squeezed the trigger.....click. I had forgot to load my rifle. I cycled the bolt and by the time I got it loaded as slowly and with the least amount of movement as possible the coyote had moved into thicker cover with a head shot being the only option. As I squeezed the trigger I noticed the coyote start to move but I was already committed to the shot. So I did and of course shot where the coyote used to be. I never saw it again.
I don't know if I'm cursed or what's going on but I've sure had a string of bad luck. I've never ran into problems like this before. All the sudden everything that can go wrong is going wrong.
Correction....I haven't ran across this type of luck while huntin before. The bad luck itself is normal.
