Rod and reel for non-serious and growing kids

I booked a beach house in July for a family reunion. I actually don't even have a rod and reel set up anymore. This leads me to the question:

Is there a good, budget rod and reel combo that would fit my needs to fish in the surf 3 or 4 times and then have on hand for deer lease and park ponds ( teaching the kids as they get older)?

I assume a spinning reel will be my best bet once kids are throwing them?

For surf duty and kids, it would be tough to beat a spinning rig. Something in a 6'-7' medium action filled with ~15lb braid.

Without spending money on a reel the surf is going to eat it up in 1 trip. You can pick up a functional budget combo that will serve its purpose for your trip from Academy, but I wouldn’t count on the reel be used again.

Hard to beat a trusty Zebco outfit. I still have a 202 and 404 I started out with 60 years ago.

My kids use a 303 combo every year, every time you get done spray it down with some reel magic and it is good to go.

Don't need anything too large. I'd go spinning like you thought.

Just get small circle hooks and bait with shrimp. Kids will be catching whiting and sand trout all day

Thanks. May get me something like this. Then a few cheap zebcos.

I'm 49 and still use a 33 more often than not.

I found my old 33 in my Dads garage after he passed away in 2017. Cleaned it up and used it some last year. I got that when I was probably 7 or 8 years old. 43 now. Caught several fish with too. Kinda like going back in time.

Up for more good input. I've watched a few entertaining videos of guys (more like teenage youtubers) putting together some decent inexpensive rod and reel combos.

I liked the mention above on catching whiting. I'm almost an internet expert on rigs to catch 'em. Looks fun and perfect.

If you’re willing to spend $150, the Daiwa BG 2500 on a 7’ M Calico Jack rod is really hard to beat IMO. There’s not really anything I would consider better for less than twice the money, and it’s cheap enough that it won’t ruin my day if a rod gets broken or dropped overboard.

If that’s above your budget, the Penn Battle II combos are reasonable and will catch fish, but they are heavier, weaker, and less sensitive.
