Fish finder rig in the Surf newbie question...

ok so I get how to make a fish finder rig with a bait and sliding weight. What I kind of don't get is how you fish it. Do you cast is out and then free line it? letting the bait go with the current. Maybe let it out slowly I don't know about an open/free spool. I can't imagine you fish it like a normal weight on the bottom and a tight line.

    - I know it's a total newbie question.

I’ve always fished mine tight lined and let the current do the work. I started catching way more fish when I switched up to a 3-way swivel set up rather than a sliding weight.

Normally I would fish, what I would call a mouse trap, like this shark fishing rig. I figure that the Fish finder rig is more to cast up current and let the bait drift down the the target fish. I guess I haven't tried a three way swivel for larger fish. I have used a double drop rig like that for smaller things like Pompano and whiting.

mouse trap, I have no idea where I got that name from but it's stuck

I use 3ways double drops and lures for light tackle. The mousetrap design is basically what I use for sharks on my runouts and castouts.

Jacks, bull reds, sheepshead, drum, trout, sharks...pretty much caught them all on 3-way rigs. We also use lighter casting shark rigs similar to the above pic you posted too.
