    Cattle help

You guys have always given great advice. I have a cow (first calf heifer) with an issue. She lost a large calf last year in March that we had to pull. I noticed last night she was swollen. This morning it was much worse. I am by no means an expert. I thought this might have been some sort of prolapse. I took her to the vet, not prolapse and he didn’t know what the issue was. Treated with steroid shot and antibiotics powder to be given with food.

    Has anyone seen this before?

Also I can’t get on TBH on my computer only my phone. Can I reset my password from my phone?

    Thanks as always.

He also said he believed her calf was 5 or 6 months along and felt normal.

If you can’t tell by the pic. It’s like bags of fluid hanging.

Cow **** what has TBH come to.
I have no ideal normally a springing cow will swell a little in that area as she gets close to caving, but she is not close enough for that and her swelling is way more than normal.

Have seen that before on some heifers. In that case it was an allergic reaction. They got into some bees or something in the barn. Could also be allergic reaction to meds or a vaccine if you recently worked her. A few days later it was completely gone. Pretty odd though for sure.

Sorry, been there before with a registered Beefmaster. This is a prolapsed uterus. The vet will stitch her up, and tell you to sell her for slaughter when you are ready to wean the calf. However, this one doesn't looks as bad as mine did.

I've been a rancher all my life and never seen anything like that. I would stick with the vets plan for a few days.

I've had a few get swollen similar to that and the swelling eventually went down. I figured it was a bee or wasp sting. I agree with doghouse about waiting a few days and trying the vets plan.

Not to argue but, for the uterus to be prolapsed the calf has to be out.

That is not a prolapsed uterus. Google bovine prolapsed uterus, and you’ll see what has to be stuffed back in and why it has to be sewn shut

Thanks for the replies. Going to follow the vets instructions for now. The allergic reaction would seem good except I have not treated recently and I doubt there are any bees, but perhaps something. I will update next week.

Not a prolapse, I would bet the swelling will be gone in a few days.

Agree. I'm guessing allergic reaction as well.
