    Question for Taxidermists

What do you pay for a nice flat top pedestal about 36" tall. One that is big enough to hold a big animal like a Kudu? We went to the shop of the guy who is going to mount ours yesterday and he said he was paying $750 for an oak one and $1100 for a oak one with hide inserts.

They are very nice and very well made. Is this about the going rate?

Not a taxi by any means but some FYI , I paid 550 for this oak base mount.

They can easily reach $1000 or more, just depends on how fancy you get. Most of mine have been in the $400-$600 range, and a few have been over $1000.

375 for this one (pedestal only, no rock). It was handmade, approx 22" across by, I'd say, about 34" tall.

A pedestal is like having another piece of furniture. I don't like pedestals that are bigger than the animal they are representing. That's why I prefer a cedar post or likewise. I have some decisions to make in regards to my Mexico buck. Decisions! Decisions!

That's why Stupid will be getting a twig to serve as a pedestal for his Mexico deer. My buck can handle a larger base.

Here are a couple that Ive built. The one with the turkey was for my son, its made of long leaf pine (textured) 42" tall by 16" across $350. The larger pedestal is knotty alder its 30" tall by 28" wide. A Cape Buffalo will be on it. The top is removable for easier transporting. This size runs $450. Most of the pedestals I make are made from Red Oak for the same price as stated.
