Victoria Tx Deer Hunters Speak Up

I was approached about taking on a 1600 acre ranch just south of Victoria. I hunted the Lower Mission Valley Rd area 15 some odd years ago and while we had numerous deer nothing with any size. I realized times have change with the 13 inch rule, better game management, and protein. With that said can a fellow expect to grow some bone in that area?????????

Speak up about your expereince or just PM me.

I hunt in fayette county one of the 7 or 9 origional counties to start the program. So far it been somewhere around 9 -12 yrs or so since it started. Well back then you were lucky to see a deer at all pretty much went to drink and be in the woods. And now i get more and more excited every deer season. When i sat in my stand for the first time in 08 i had about 20 does and 7 bucks frequent my spot in 2 hours. I shot the 7 buck. the last 3 years hunting have been awesome. My opinion the rule rocks. Bucks are getting bigger and bigger. I now know i can pass one up and not have to worry about seeing another one.

we have a place about 3 miles on the cuero side of the myersville cut off on 183. our beer arent boone and crocket, but we protein fed one year and royce (my oldest brother) shot a buck that grossed 136-6/8.
some potential with good management, but we just cant seem to find any old bucks.

I was at a seminar a couple of years ago with a state and private biologist that was open to the public. We were talking about managing deer in east Texas but that issue was brought up about the original counties and the protest that some people had. I am sure that you never get everyone happy but at that time the results that were reported to us were positive and successful. There were people that almost never saw a good buck were now passing them up for bigger ones.

San Antonio River Rd area? Had a former friend who had some property leased there many moons ago. Decent hunting, nothing great but there is some potential if they can get some age.

Thanks for the feedback. I heard there are some harvest limit changes comming down from Austin perhaps increasing the doe limits south of Hwy59????

                    Anybody else hunt the area????

                      Good numers, quality well...
Depends on what you are looking for. I'd say the average mature buck is 120 class. They'll be some bigger but hard to find. Even with the antler restrictions bucks are just getting killed at 3.5 instead of 1.5. Not sure many mature bucks are making it through.

We used to own about 400 acres East of Goliad, heading towards Victoria along the SA river. We managed to kill several 150 class deer and even passed on some younger/better bucks after about 10 years of management. Like others have said, if you can get some age on the deer, they too will show you their potential.

we hunt lavaca county just along the lavaca river, and since it started we have seen an increase of bucks with better horns that when we first got on that place 19 years ago. we have also seen an increase of doe that have increased nearly every year it seems. we have killed bucks in the past 5 years that score from the 115 to the biggest one we have taken off that place at 135 3/8. i do honestly think that the horn rule has made a considerable difference, and that we have food plots not big ones just some to entertain the appetite of the animals and put out a few protein feeders, being no one else around us really hunts at all we have had good luck....... hope all makes well for you
