    Floating Fish Feeder Plans

I am tossing around the idea of making a floating fish feeder for my buddies pond in Robertson County, TX. Does anyone have any plans or suggestions on making one? I did some research, and found these few pictures on the Pondboss forum, that I am using as a guide.

I'm thinking of using 4" PVC as the frame, filled with expanding foam.

The barrel I want to use is a 30 gallon, and will have 4 stubby legs, and a Eliminator plate, to seal off humidity, and hopefully help the feed last longer.

Any suggestions, advice, or plans? Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure why this would be any better than a directional fish feeder throwing into a floating ring.

        What are the benefits?

Pain to fill. I would just do directional that you can walk up to and fill

I have one on a pier that is directional with no problems. My problem is our back tank has no pier and water level can vary depending on rain.

Not trying to hijack your thread OP.

It’s about 6’ deep under that feeder. That is the edge of the pond normally

My concern with a floating feeder like you posted in the op would be wind. Especially with the way it's been blowing lately. That sucker tips over and you're going to have a heck of a mess on your hands.

I built one a few years back. Just built a 6x6 platform with barrels under it. Used cable and concrete in buckets to hold in place. Bolted the feeder down to the platform. I was able to take my boat out to it and fill the feeder while standing on the platform. Only issues was coons would swim out on occasion and mess with the feeder (of course they can do the same with a feeder on land)
                    Anyway it worked great

Here are a few crude sketches.

I found an online calculator for PVC pipe (https://sciencing.com/calculate-buoy...e-8698988.html), and if I did the math correctly, it will support 292 lbs, which is more than enough for what I am after.

The PVC frame (each side is 4' long, plus the 90* elbow at each corner, using 6" pipe the whole way) will have a 'cross' that will support each leg (4) of the feeder.

I think PVC glue on each joint will be sufficient, and also tossed around the idea of filling the frame with the spray foam insulation or pool noodles, but I was concerned with taking up the valuable space inside the pipe with something less buoyant than air. As further backup, I could always use Flex Seal. Any thoughts?

I am by no means a fabricator or engineer, just like messing with random projects in the garage. As my mother always told my brother and I when we were growing up "go do something productive!"

Hopefully, I'll get cranking on it over the weekend.

                      Any suggestions are welcome.

Here is an update on the base, we were surprised at how buoyant it was. The 30 gallon barrel that will sit on top of the PVC has 4 legs, and a coat of primer. Hope to get this wrapped up soon, so I can move on to other projects.

Is there anyway we can see the next photo snapped after this one?
