I buried a good friend today.
Russell was 47 years old and spent the last year fighting brain cancer like he'd never lose the battle. I'd never seen anyone so determined to have a great attitude in the face of such devastation.
We met when I was 10 and he was 12 and I was the first baseman and he was the catcher on our local Little League baseball team. At the end our his life, he owned a trucking company that did a lot of work for one of my companies. As soon as I learned that Russell owned a trucking company, I knew who would be our dedicated trucking company. He was that dependable. Few friendships span 35 years, but ours did. We weren't especially close over all those years, but every time we got together was a trip back in time....to BMX and first girlfriends and sneaking beers. I'll miss him greatly.
At Russell's funeral today, his son got up to talk about about God's will and how Russell truly believed that he had no place to complain about something that God had set up....Russ said this to me many times in his last months. So remember, we aren't promised tomorrow. There is no guarantee that we will be able to tell those that we love that we do indeed love them. So, embrace God's will. It is what it is and we have to have enough faith in God's plan not to second guess it.
I'll miss my old friend and I'll check in on his kids from time to time, but God's will be done....whether we agree or not. So, hug your kids, your wife, your parents, your friends. Tell your buddy you love him...it don't make you gay.
Embrace every moment, because one day they bury each and every one of us and when they bury me, I want to make sure that not only is God's will done, but that also I've let everyone I care about know it.
Life is short, but man it sure is fun.
