    Deer Behavior

I’m sitting here in my recliner watching my feeder and amazed at the intelligence of our Texas deer.
I have reset the feeding clock to 7:15am from 7:00am because of the recent cloudy mornings.
The deer have arrived for the 7:00am feeding and around 6:50 they have, as always started moving away from the feeder, awaiting it to feed. At 7:05 they went back to the feeder cautiously as if something was wrong. At 7:10 they now have moved out of sight of my home window view from the recliner. I have been watching these deer( up to 15 at a time) over the years show up on a regular basis. Again, It amazes me of the intelligence of timing they have, it’s now 7:17 am and the feeder has fed. Here they come, again cautiously. First two doe, then two more arrive... will continue later as I’m awaiting the 140 class +\- last deer of the season.

I feed 20-25 every day, 2-3 times at random. They watch me walk to the corn bin and head my way. They’re not smart, simply conditioned like Pavlov,s dogs. Wife goes out to feed them and they’re more cautious because it’s different person.

Conditioned is probably more like it.

Nice buck. I did not have a single deer come to the feeders where I was this morning. That has never happened.

Okay, he is in the cooler and I have eaten breakfast. To recap, tstat set on 68 degrees and it was 35 outside the four doe were feeding , my wife had woke up and I was telling her that only doe were out there. Then I looked back at the feeder and a legal 8 was under the feeder but was one of the three year old bucks. We had been seeing several legal 8’s and four or five other bucks but there is one 140 class that hasn’t showed up in a while. Being this is the last day I could try to harvest a deer my wife said I better shot him. You see this weekend we were supposed to be at our place in Oakwood hunting but she has been ill and I didn’t want her to be out in this cool weather. So I grabbed by 270 and went to the front porch. Waiting on him to turn broadside, then here comes an older 8 at about 130 yds. He stopped and was watching my yard dog moving around then behind me 13 more doe started coming in to the feeder. The younger buck looked up and spooked because of my dog, which spooked all of the deer. Everything was at attention now then the older buck stopped broadside ( bad move ). We now have enough venison for the year.
Thank you Lord for your bounty!

As you can see my yard dog got to him before I did. Oh well that’s what I trained him (Tracker ) for. No meat just hide!
