You’re saying it’s “legal” to shoot a baby deer, which is technically true but not encouraged by the state. If the state went as far as enforcing aging laws on deer that would be highly complicated and people would really have there panties in a wad. People would also be fined left and right. The 13” rule is pretty easy to follow. Telling someone they have to also accurately age a deer, buck or doe, would discourage a lot of people from hunting and in my opinion would be a bit of over reach.

Didn’t say I agreed with the 13 inch rule, just posted one of the arguments for.

High grading. I can only say that my property,(small and low fence in East Texas), has had better bucks each year since AR. Yes, some bucks slip through the regulations,, but overall, our bucks are scoring higher.

every now and then I see one buck I would like to shoot or have my kid shoot that won’t make 13”, however I see lots of deer now I definitely want to shoot that are mature and over 13”

I’ll take that over brown and down old days

This. Been on the same ground my entire life.

And anyone who thinks its for the money needs to take up crochet

I shot a 3 year old spike this year... one horn was about 7” long. The other was just about 1.5”.

Yes I understand what you are saying but a 3.5 is a big difference than a nubbin that just broke the skin and weighed no more than 50 lbs

Don’t know what could be done, but like I’ve said just doesn’t make much sense.

              It’s all about big horns.

It’s the most effective rule to have more mature, healthy deer herds in the state. It does make sense.

Ok so how does shooting a 6 month old buck with 2” horns make a more mature and healthy herd??

How does shooting any buck you see make the herd more mature and healthy? Which without AR you could shoot anything with antlers. Can’t do that now.

It’s not full proof, nothing ever is. But it’s certainly helping by a ton. Ask anyone who grew up in counties with antler restrictions now who don’t like shooting yearling spikes.

I didn’t say that you did. I’m not saying ar is bad it works I get it. My only question again is I believe ar is in place for bucks to reach maturity, but it’s ok to shoot a 6 month old. That’s what doesn’t make sense.

It’s okay if you don’t buy into the purpose of AR. If you ask any game warden, state biologist or anyone that believes AR is a good thing they’ll say no shooting a 6 month old is highly frowned upon. Refer back to my aging comment, you can’t make an aging rule without seriously deterring people from becoming hunters with the stringent rules.

I have hunted places where the genetics prevented a good percentage of mature bucks from reaching 13" wide. I have a friend who got into major trouble for a 12" wide 141" b&c buck.
