    Predator hunt advice

Got a predator hunt coming up and trying to decide if it would be better to shoot foxes with a 17hmr suppressed or my 300bo suppressed with subsonic ammo. All shots last year were under 70 yards and most about 40-50 yards. Not sure if the heavy (220 gr.) 300bo or the smaller faster bullet would be more lethal. I will also have a creedmoor or Grendel with me but was wanting something a little quieter if possible to maybe get multiple animals at one spot. My teammate will have a shotgun also.

17hmr will handle foxes easy. Coyotes that aren't close and standing still is a different story.

I'd go 300BO. Make sure you have the knockdown for anything inside 100 whether its moving or you have time for a perfect shot.

I always take a shotgun with brass loads for up close critters.

Speed kills on predators. But, both will kill would shoot the .17 if it was me if there was no big wind.

300 Blackout in case something else comes in instead. Unless you're worried about pelt damage. In that case a shotgun would be the best option. I don't consider the HMR as much of a predator cartridge. It'll work but there are definitely better options out there.

Killed plenty critters with both. Im a huge fan of the 17 but yotes that don't drop in sight leave little blood trail. Being you said teammate maybe there is a contest involved so Id go 300 blk and not really worry about subsonic unless that's what your rifle is ready for. 17 is bad medicine on the average fox and like said, near zero pelt damage

Would be the 300 for me. Never been a big fan of the .17

Either would be a good choice!

I would typically go .17hmr. Especially if big Fox is a side pot. Every little bit of weight helps

The 17 all day and never look back.

If you're not worried about fur and just in a varmint hunt I'd say take whatever puts them down in a hurry. They won't count if they run off wounded. I've seen one run in to 60 yards after almost getting shot in the head with a .223....sound doesn't seem to bother them near as much as it does other things.

I've read a few times lately to use a shotgun to minimize fur damage. I would think it would tear them up really bad.

Yes in a contest. I will be shooting the 6.5 when in coyote country. Just thinking the 300 shooting subs( bolt gun) would be quieter than the 17.

I’d go with the 6.5 and not have to worry about range or shot angle. I’ve seen the 17hmr used, and unless it under 100 yds or a head shot they usually pact it off. I also played around with the 300 BO with subsonic, not good. I know a guy that uses the BO with faster 125 grn loads and it works good. I am lucky enough to have a big place with lots of yotes so I experimented with over 10 different calibers over the last 10 years. Without a doubt, the fast 17 calibers like the 17 Fireball or 17 Remington are the best. Anywhere from 50 yds to 350, it’s like they are struck by lightening, I love the shotgun with #4 buck also if I’m with someone else, so I don’t have to pack two guns. Good luck

I understand the 6.5 would do great. But was thinking I could possibly kill multiple foxes from 1 set if I was shooting something subsonic or even the 17hmr suppressed. It’s not subsonic but it’s not really loud either.
