    Whiskey helps all involved.

I shot this deer in OK this year. Not sure if he had a run in with one prior or maybe just ran into one on his death run but he had them in his face. Not the best picture but you get the idea.

Your poor dog, that has to suck for him.

Imagining how a deer had a face to face run in with a Porcupine. That had to be an interesting scene. crazy.

I've never had much animosity toward porcupines. But after seeing them be feeder pen bullies in game camera pics, and the damage they do to trees, i've been more inclined to eradicate them. I let the air out of a big one last week. More to come i hope.

Hate to see it for the good puppy dog. Here's to good healing and lessons learned.

My english setter tried to eat one on a pheasant hunt. He had about 100 in his face, mouth, and nose. I thought I got them all out. 2 wks later his eye swelled up really bad. One quill had migrated through the top of his mouth or under his skin and got right up to his eye. Luckily the vet was able to get it out and save his eye.

We have a family get together at our place in Oklahoma every fall and my 10 year old sat in the blind with my 14 year old nephew this past year. They shot a porcupine and when they got back to the house were all excited about it. My son said “Landen shot it 9 times!” I said “he had 9 arrows with him?” My son said “no...we had to get out and retrieve his arrows 4 different times!” LOL! They were as excited as if he had shot a 150” buck.

They used to be off limits but after they killed several of my late grandmothers prized trees all bets were off!

My cousins had a heeler one time that hated porcupines. He'd go hunt them down intentionally and let you pull the quills out so he could go get another. He'd yelp every once in a while but for the most part he'd sit there until they were all pulled out. That dog was something else. Never seen another one quite like him. I never seen it happen but I guarantee you he didn't just bite porcupines he tore them to shreds. He'd be covered in those dadgum quills.

I've had 2 dogs get into them. One was my border collie that we used for tracking. He would sit there and let you pull the quills out, and only did it once. The other was a pit bull mix. That dog got into them 4 or 5 times and like someone else stated, it just made her madder and more aggressive on the next one. I would have to take her to the vet to get them out every time... She wasn't having any part of you taking them out of her.
I shoot every porcupine I see on our place.

One guy on our lease is from New Mexico and says the same as you guys. The dogs don't really quit chasing them down and just ticks them off even more. Your dog takes the cake though.
